Kanab is a beautiful little city, nestled within a circle of Vermillion cliffs on the banks of a creek from which it received its name. The word Kanab is an anglicized form of the Paiute word for “Willows.” Long before white men set foot upon its sandy banks, this creek was named by the Paiute because of the lush growth of willows along the stream.

Kanab was originally settled by Mormons under the leadership of their prophet, Brigham Young, who was looking for areas to expand the boundaries of the new Zion. In the early days, Kanab’s primary industry was the raising of livestock including sheep, goats, and cattle. The town, once known as the most inaccessible in the United States, is surrounded by sand dunes and the Colorado River.
